COFFEE

The difference between specialty and commodity coffee is not absolutely straightforward. Specialty coffee is defined by the quality of the coffee on the Specialty Coffee Association scale (above 80, on a 100 point scale). But specialty coffee is much more than that.

Many specialty coffee roasteries form relationships with the farms, washing stations and co-operatives they buy from, whether they buy directly from farmers or from specialist green coffee companies. Specialty coffee is always of a better quality and farmers are paid far above the commodity price.

A 250g bag of coffee makes around 15 cups - depending on your personal preferences.

One cup per day: 250g every 2 weeks or 1Kg every 4 weeks.

Two cups per day: 2 x 250g every 2 weeks or 1Kg every 4 weeks.

Three or four cups per day: 1Kg every 2 weeks or 2Kg every 4 weeks.

We use light to medium roast profiles for the majority of our coffees, especially for single origins to best represent the natural characteristics of the origin it came from that is perfect for filter brewing. However we want to offer maximum choice for the modern drinker so we also offer dark roast profiles suited for coffees for brewing as an espresso.

We roast every week on Tuesdays and ship Wednesdays and Fridays.

We believe that the fresher the coffee is, the better it tastes. All coffee orders received by 12:00pm on Tuesday will be roasted, bagged in our recyclable pouches and shipped the following day. This means that the coffee you receive from us will be as fresh as possible and lastingly delicious.

Some of our coffees are certified organic, but not necessarily labelled as such. Specialty coffee growing standards often go above what is needed for organic certification, but not always certified because of the costs involved.

We don’t necessarily buy “Fairtrade” coffee, instead we buy traceable coffees with ethical buying practices. By selling to the specialty coffee market farmers can earn more than fair trade prices for their coffee.

We currently source our coffees in a variety of ways. We mostly buy from trusted green coffee buyers and importers, who are transparent about their costs and the prices paid to the farmers.

“Washed” or “natural” coffees refers to the processing of the coffee from the small fruit it is on a tree to the dried seed that is ready for shipping. The hard and fast rule is that natural coffees are more fruity and funky, whereas washed coffees are cleaner with lighter bodies — but like all rules, this one is best when broken.

Our standard bags are 250g. If you require larger amounts, select 1Kg on the product page on our website.

All our coffee bags are 100% recyclable via kerbside or soft plastics collection points at larger stores of major supermarkets.

Unfortunately, we don't sell anything under 250g as it's not economical for us to produce, we still pack and label our coffees by hand and for us to start offering units under even 200g would start costing us more in labour than the cost of the coffee.

All our coffees are roasted to order, meaning they couldn't be fresher. We advise a best before date of 6 months from the order date.
